      Context

Indian Airlines instituted a competition for the design of a large hangar, Daraius Batliwala, Ratan Dubash of Dubon, and Kowaniko of STUP from Paris, jointly took part in the competition and won first prize for the design.

      Concept

The hangar had balanced 200 feet cantilevers on either side of a three storey, 90 feet wide central core, whose columns were cross braced at the ends. These and other columns projecting 30 feet above the roof line, in turn anchored high tension hangers that held up 200 feet cantilevers on either side. The cantilevered roof suspension had a folded plate roof along the 300 foot length of the hangar, potential to house a number of aircraft. On completion in 1963 it was the largest cantilevered structure in Asia.
